Virtue as a Power to Change the World
“Forget injuries but never forget kindnesses”
|
|
Friday, January
25 at 7:30 pm
Fee: $10
Confucius is known for having said many wise things... His ideas have
influenced eastern thought for thousands of years, especially on the
topics of society and morality. Join us for an evening of discovery,
for some, or a re-encounter for others, of some very timely and timeless
Analects. Confucius identified the faults of a government by regulations
and punishments and the virtues of a government by goodness and example.

Heroic Archetypes
of the Arthurian World "If this be our destiny then so
be it. But let history remember that, as freemen, we chose to make
it so."
|
|
| Friday, Februrary 1
at 7:30 pm
Fee: $10
The Arthurian Legend emerged out of the mists of history. This mythic
tradition synthesized both Pagan and Christian symbolic elements
in an heroic epic of struggle, transcendence and destiny. The hero
is an archetypal figure recorded in literature and other art forms
throughout history in cultures from all around the world. Some of
these figures take fantastic journeys that test their heroic strengths
and worth. Other figures undergo tremendous suffering for some greater,
heroic purpose. Join us as we explore the heroic archetype in its
universal and individual aspects through the inspiration of the
Arthurian World. |

What does this 1999 science fiction thriller which describes a future
in which reality perceived by humans is actually the Matrix, a simulated
reality created by sentient machines have in common with Plato? Yes
– that’s Plato, as in the philosopher Plato. Press the
rewind button back to about 400BC and enter: Plato’s Myth of
the Cave: a matrix which vividly describes a world of self-delusion
by the cave’s inhabitants, the manipulation by the “masters
of the cave” and one man’s journey of liberation. And
what do the Matrix and Plato have to say about today’s world?
Take the philosophy pill and find out for yourself. |

What can the Stoic Philosophers teach us about the modern world? They
can show us to recognize those things that we can change and those
things which are beyond our control – how to be most effective
and stop wasting time. They demonstrate the courage to face our destiny
and the honesty to see ourselves as we truly are. Remarkably practical,
refreshingly genuine and authentic, the Stoics show us what it truly
means to be human even as we stand before the great challenges of
our time. |
